Frozen ice causes the Housatonic river to overflow in Kent, CT

Northwest Connecticut doesn't experience flooding on a regular basis however this past weekend's flooding in Kent, CT shows that it can happen! After the warm temperatures and rainfall on Friday, the drop in temperature caused substantial ice dams to form on the Housatonic River. This stopped the flow of the water and caused the river to overflow onto Route 7 and beyond.
Several homes and businesses were flooded, even requiring a state of emergency to be declared and emergency evacuations conducted for several residents. Kent schools were closed closed for safety as well. We are so thankful for the emergency personnel who have helped the residents during this event.
In addition to water damage, of concern is that the floodwater is dirty water, containing sewage and other contaminants. Bacteria and viruses are present in floodwaters and can cause unsanitary conditions and pose a health risk to residents. The water that is in your basement and may be covering your possessions should be cleaned professionally to ensure that it is cleaned and sanitized properly and you don't expose yourself to harmful water.
